Phoenix, AZ— As Sheriff Arpaio faces growing legal problems in court, migrants and allies are calling for the Sheriff to step down and for the federal government to remove ICE agents from Maricopa County and to stop deporting people arrested by notorious racist Arpaio and his deputies. One week after a federal judge’s refusal to delay Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s contempt of court hearings, they will rally outside of Arpaio’s 4th Avenue Jail. Puente will be joined by Netroots Nation, the largest progressive conference in the country, bringing together more than 3,000 progressive activists and leaders in Phoenix from July 16 to 18.
Carlos Garcia, Director of the Puente Movement, said, “Arpaio will never willingly change his ways, as shown by his speech at Donald Trump’s campaign stop in Phoenix. Maricopa County needs to remove Arpaio from office immediately and it needs to end the policies and institutions he’s established with him.” Noting that Arpaio’s anti-immigrant approach was made possible by collaboration from the federal government, Garcia added, “The racist policies that Arpaio spearheaded while in office set precedent for other states and were operationalized by the federal government. What we’ve seen in Phoenix paved the way for the President’s record deportations and anti-immigrant backlash everywhere. The same community that has been terrorized by Arpaio for all these years will be the ones that ensure that when he leaves, it starts a new day and doesn’t just put a new face on his terrible reign.”
“One of our primary goals with this year’s conference is to expose some of the unjust practices in our current immigration system and elevate the stories and voices of local activists fighting back against those practices,” said Netroots Nation Executive Director Raven Brooks. “Sheriff Arpaio has a long history of abusing power and terrorizing immigrant families in Maricopa County. We’re proud to stand with local organizers against this legacy of inhumane treatment and racial profiling.”
Noemi Romero, who was arrested in one of Arpaio’s workplace raids and is participating in a lawsuit against his targeting of undocumented workers such as herself, says, “I am one of hundreds arrested by Arpaio for nothing more than working. We are taking our power back to get rid of Arpaio and make sure that no one else has to suffer like we have.”
Tefere Gebre, the Executive Vice President of the AFL-CIO, says, “The AFL-CIO and I vehemently believe all people have a fundamental right to live without fear and with dignity. Sheriff Arpaio only harbors hate and has chosen to terrorize workers, their families, all which are communities of color, immigrant families and working women. We say out with Arpaio and Adelante with the people, together we rise!”
Netroots Nation is the largest progressive conference in the country, bringing together more than 3,000 progressive activists and leaders to strategize around key issues each year. In addition to the rally at the 4th Avenue Jail, the conference will include a Presidential Town Hall and more than 80 panels on topics ranging from the 2016 elections, immigration, criminal justice and more.
Puente is a grassroots migrant justice organization in Phoenix, AZ that has been fighting Arpaio since its inception in 2007. Puente is currently leading the #ArpaioFreeAZ campaign to get rid of Arpaio and the policies and practices he has institutionalized.
