After Katherine Figueroa’s parents were arrested in one of Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s sweeps last year, the 10-year-old says she began living in constant fear.
For three months while her parents were in jail, Figueroa says she was terrified to ride in the car or go to the store with relatives for fear they too would be arrested. She said Maricopa County deputies filled her nightmares.
“I also had bad dreams where the deputies would take my aunt and me to jail, too,” Figueroa told protesters who gathered for the “Children’s March for Family Unity” on Saturday.
Figueroa was among several dozen children and their families who gathered at the state Capitol in the morning to protest SB 1070, the state’s controversial new immigration law.
